Ask anyone

You believe me, don’t you?

I was just speaking with someone and they were telling me a story. Towards the end of it they stopped mid sentence and said, “If you don’t believe me, you can ask anyone that knows me, they’ll tell you I don’t lie.” I didn’t hear anything they said after that. It might as well have been Peanuts parents speaking to me. That one sentence blocked me from the rest of their story. It irks me every time someone says it. If we’re speaking or communicating in any way at all, don’t expect me to be mentally available after that. I now no longer have any skin in this game. I don’t care how cool the story sounds or how awesome it might be. If you start giving me orders to go find unknown (and don’t lie, they probably only exist in your mind as well) references to back up whatever it is that you’re trying to say or prove, then I just want you to know this. From the bottom of my heart, whether it matters or not, you just lost me. I’m not doing it and now I no longer care whether or not you’ve ever eaten opossum with a random guy you met while camping. It doesn’t matter to me anymore how many whole walnuts you ate before having to go to the hospital. I’m no longer invested in listening to you tell me about the time traveler you met when you worked for the CIA nor do I want to see photos of the “aliens” NASA went to the moon to meet. And if you don’t believe me, you can go ask anyone that knows me, they’ll tell you.

  1. You ate possum with aliens that work at the CIA? How do I know you’re telling me the truth?
